4. Who Would Be The Audience for your Media Product?

Coming of age dramas often target the 16-24 year old market, and ours is no exception, though it primarily targets females through its female character and themes of romance and friendship.

Films With Similar Target Audiences:

'Now Is Good' is a coming of age drama focused on life before death from cancer, as oppose to afterwards in our film.

The target audience for our film is 16-24 year old females as they are the core demographic who go to see coming of age dramas starring female protagonists, but we also have tried to target other demographics.

Occupation: Students, people taking a gap year or starting a job - In a similar life situation to Lila
Class: Middle Class - Our characters are all middle class, but making a bucket list is something that is extended to all classes
Interests: Fashion, music, photography, film, socialising
Tastes in Media:  Attractive male characters, aspirational and likeable female characters, strong female protagonists, realistic friendships, clever narratives, romance, humour
Film consumption habits: Both independent and mainstream cinema, chick flicks, rom coms, coming of age dramas, such as Clueless, Mean girls, Sixteen Candles, The Notebook, Now is Good, Albatross
Ethnicity: A wide range, especially as we have an asian character, Jess.
Fandom:
  • We hope that 'Turning Pages' might inspire a similar cult following to that of films like 'Lost in Translation', or the coming of age drama 'Napoleon Dynamite' as we have tried to create unusual characters, a funny script and an interesting narrative, however our film may not be quirky enough to attract them.
  • We hope that the actor playing Noah and the character himself might become a heartthrob figure
  • We hope that the actress playing Lila may become an 'It girl', or a modern day Molly Ringwald, but Lila is unlikely to become a teenage icon as her costume is not particularly iconic.
  • We also hope that funny phrases and lines from our film might become a part of popular culture, like 'Save Ferris' (Ferris Bueller's Day off) and 'Vote for Pedro' (Napoleon Dynamite) have, and perhaps start merchandize deals such as the 'Adventureland' t-shirts that are currently popular.

We chose this audience as we saw from our research that the majority of cinema goers were in the 16-24 age bracket and that the percentage of them going to cinemas is steadily increasing, which would give us the largest potential audience, especially as they are also the most likeliest to go to the cinema, as can be seen from this chart:

This allows us to make maximum profit which we could then reinvest into producing more films.

Occupation: Students - Similar life situation to Noah

Tastes in Media: Attractive females, fight scenes, humor

Tastes in Media: Thought prvoking narratives, gritty drama, period drama

FURTHER APPEAL:
  1. Working and Upper Class people of all ages will also be able to identify with the themes of youth, hope, loss and carpe diem
  2. One of our 'helper' characters, Jess, is chinese, so that may extend appeal to a chinese audience especially as Oriental characters are rare, not just the Coming of Age drama genre, but all genres
  3. Our film will have a lot of national appeal as it will be set in Britain, contain British iconography like tea, and have British characters
  4. Our film's strong british feel may also appeal to Anglophiles around the world, especially in places like America
  5. As our film is made in English it has potential global appeal
